Our Verdict: Birds Choice Recycled Jay Bird Feeder For Whole Peanuts
I feel really good knowing that after testing these products, I truly discovered the best whole peanut feeder for blue jays. It really is an excellent product that I feel comfortable recommending to all my readers.
Why do I think it’s so great?
First of all, I give this bird feeder two thumbs-up because I definitely find it aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, it isn’t the most attractive bird feeder that I ever reviewed, but it has its charms nonetheless.
Overall, I truly appreciate the simplicity of the design and style.
Next, this blue jay feeder is relatively easy to handle, which makes it very simple to install. I had no trouble hanging it up in multiple locations throughout my backyard as I tested different places to put the bird feeder before I settled on my favorite spot, which was hanging from a hook on my backyard deck.
Third, the product was made using very strong, flexible, yet durable materials like recycled poly-lumber, so I feel certain that it will last for many years. Plus, they used acrylic plexiglass panels during the product creation process, which makes it simple for birds to locate and take a peanut directly from the feeder.
Fourth, the roof opens wide, which makes it very easy to refill the bird feeder with whole peanuts. Grab them by the handful and stuff them into the feeder tube or grab a scoop of peanuts and scoop them directly into the feeding device.
This is easy enough to accomplish without any difficulty.
Finally, the straightforward design means it’s very easy to clean and care for this attractive bird feeder with a green roof.
To start with, you should remove the peanuts and peanut shells before cleaning, then take out the acrylic plexiglass windows and thoroughly wipe them down. Afterward, you can wipe down the poly-lumber hopper, the green roof, the gray wire, and everything else that needs to quickly and thoroughly be cleaned.
It’s also important to note that I believe the Birds Choice Recycled Jay Bird Feeder is a great recommendation for anyone and everyone looking for a whole peanut feeder for their backyard.

Aesthetics
As I alluded to, I certainly like this bird feeder and believe it is attractive enough, but at the end of the day I only scored it with a 60 out of 100. This score places it near the bottom of the pack as far as aesthetics are concerned.
Why did I give it such a low score?
First off, I had other bird feeders that I was comparing it with that I found more pleasant looking and attractive. The Woodlink Deluxe Cedar Bird Feeder received a perfect 100 out of 100.
On the opposite end, the Amish Poly Ground Bird Feeder Tray Received a 50 out of 100.
The Woodlink feeder comes in a beautiful natural beige color, it has a uniform yet simplistic design, and everything about it fits my personal style and preferential look.
The Amish Feeder Tray is very utilitarian and not very attractive at all. It’s a miniature version of a pig trough used for blue jays and other larger birds!
What do I like about the Birds Choice feeder?
I appreciate the friendly design. I also like the natural beige coloring and believe the green roof is attractive to boot, although I’d prefer all beige in my personal opinion.
The plexiglass windows have large openings to pull whole peanuts out of the bird feeder with the greatest of ease. This is very pleasant looking and it’s a lot of fun to watch blue jays grab hold of a large peanut and yank it from the feeder!
But at the end of the day, it’s long, fairly plain looking, and it doesn’t really stand out. It isn’t ugly but it certainly isn’t a beautiful piece of artistic expression either.
How the Birds Choice Recycled Jay Bird Feeder stacks up in the aesthetics ratings:
Ease of Installation
Along with the majority of the other bird feeders in this category, I gave the Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder with Green Roof a very respectable 80 out of 100 overall score.
And like I just said, 7 other bird feeders received the same score including the Squirrel Shop Picnic Table Platform Feeder, the Seed Saver Domed Feeder, and the Nature’s Way Hanging Platform Feeder.
Why did all of these bird feeders get the same score?
Well, I know that it can be really difficult to install or hang up a bird feeder if you aren’t very handy or you aren’t really enamored by at home DIY projects.
So…
I almost exclusively choose bird feeders that are really easy to install. I purposely choose feeders that average men and women can hang up without much difficulty even if they aren’t construction oriented in the least.
In particular, the Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder from Birds Choice is very simple to install since you only have one available choice.
The only way to install it is to hang it up. You can hang it from a pole, or a tree branch, or a hook, or any other sturdy protruding structure that can withstand around 5-6 pounds after you hang up the fully packed bird feeder.
Personally, I like to find a sturdy tree branch and hang the bird feeder from there. This provides shade and seclusion for the blue jays and it provides them a comfortable place to eat healthy and tasty whole peanuts in their natural habitat.
But you should feel free to hang it up however you like because it’s your bird feeder and your choice.
How the Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder with Roof stacks up in the ease of installation ratings:
Durability & Warranty
For Durability and Warranty, I gave this product a score of 90 out of 100, which is a great score if you ask me.
The only product to score better is the Nature’s Way Cedar Hopper Bird Feeder, which received a 100 out of 100.
What made that product perfect?
Besides the visual appeal, that bird feeder is really durable because they made it using rot and insect-resistant premium cedar. They used stay-clear crack resistant acrylic windows and rust-free hardware as well.
When you combine all these things together, it’s obvious that the manufacturer cares a great deal about the longevity of this product because they only use materials that were designed to last for many years to come.
How about the Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder?
I also really like the materials used to create this bird feeder. The recycled poly-lumber construction is a huge eye-opener because the poly-lumber that they used is incredibly durable and made from recycled plastic so it isn’t going to split, crack, or rot away on you.
The window is also made of strong and durable plexiglass too, so the birds can yank peanuts directly from the feeder without ever damaging or cracking the crystal-clear window.
As you can see, the materials are strong and durable, which is why this product definitely deserves a 9 out of 10 in my personal assessment. I really hope you agree!
How the Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder stacks up in the durability & warranty ratings:
Ease of Refilling
In the category Ease of Refilling, I gave the Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder a score of 80 out of 100, which is above average in my estimation.
In contrast, the Nature’s Way Hanging Platform Feeder received a 90 out of 100. And the JC’s Wildlife Large Poly Hopper Bird feeder received a 70 out of 100.
The Nature’s Way bird feeder received the higher score because it’s wider, so it’s easier to remain stable when hanging it up.
On the other hand:
The JC’s Wildlife Hopper feeder received a lesser score because I feel it’s too wide and it has a strange design which makes it awkward and more difficult to balance when hanging it up from the wire. Mounting it on a pole is a different story because it’s easier to stabilize the bird feeder and keep it straight while mounted.
The Birds Choice Whole Peanut Feeder received the score that it did because it has a unique design. Although it’s similar to the other hopper feeders mentioned, it’s actually a lot longer and thinner so it’s a bit easier to stabilize it.
And it’s very strong as well. When birds perch at the bottom of the bird feeder to pull out a peanut, you’ll hardly notice any swaying or rocking back and forth as they land or fly away from the feeder itself.
I don’t know about you, but I prefer my hanging bird feeders to remain stable as much as possible. Otherwise, they may rock back and forth and spill out their bird seeds and peanuts, which certainly isn’t the goal of hanging a feeder in the first place.
And it’s the reason why I like the whole peanut feeder from Birds Choice, because it never rocked back and forth and it always remained stabilized during the two-week testing period.
How the Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder stacks up in the ease of refilling ratings:
Cleaning & Care
For Cleaning & Care, I gave the Birds Choice Bird Feeder a score of 90 out of 100, which is a well-deserved score indeed.
The only other bird feeder to score better is the Amish Poly Ground Bird Feeder Tray. This product received a 100 out of 100 because it’s wide-open, easy to wipe down and clean, and you can even spray it with a hose if you need to remove seeds and other foodstuffs stuck at the bottom of the tray.
Guess what?
You can do the same with the Birds Choice Peanut Feeder as well. Honestly, the only difference is there are windows and a roof on this bird feeder that needs to be removed or at least wiped down from the inside and outside during cleaning and maintenance.
But in all honesty, you can technically spray it with a hose or bring it into your kitchen and spray it with the nozzle on your sink to rinse it off. This should remove much of the dirt and grime buildup that might accumulate while hanging outside.
And even better…
Since the birdfeeder is actually made of plastic a.k.a. recycled poly-lumber, you might even consider putting it in your dishwasher for a super thorough cleaning. But you may want to contact the manufacturer first to find out if this is safe for the feeder.
I personally never tested this method but considering it’s made of plastic it might be a viable option nonetheless.
Anyway, even without putting it in the dishwasher it’s really easy to clean because there are only a few parts that need to be wiped down or washed off with soap and water.

Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder with Green Roof FAQs:
Can I Fill The Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder with Green Roof Using Unshelled Peanuts?
It seems like a great idea on the surface, but it’s actually not the best way to fill this bird feeder.
Why?
Well, it all comes down to the size of the holes in the plastic windows.
You see, these holes are very large. In fact, they are large enough so a blue jay can easily pull an entire shelled peanut out of the feeder.
Unshelled peanuts are much smaller, as we know. So, if you fill the feeder with unshelled peanuts, you can expect them to fall out of the holes fairly regularly because they’re too small to remain secured inside the hopper.
Is It Possible To Remove The Plastic Sides Of The Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Feeder?
Yes, it’s very possible to remove the plastic sides of the blue jay peanut feeder if you need to take it apart for one reason or another.
As a matter of fact, the sides slide out quite easily. It’s simply a matter of slipping the acrylic panel up and out of the bird feeder.
And if you’re like most people, you might want to clean it off before reinserting the panel back into the feeder. This way it’s perfectly clear, clean, and free of mold and bacteria the next time you refill the bird feeder for blue jays and other larger birds.
How Many Peanuts Can Fit In The Birds Choice Whole Peanut Blue Jay Bird Feeder with Green Roof?
Well, I’ve never actually counted the peanuts by hand, but I can tell you that the hopper was designed to fit 2 ¼ quarts of peanuts.
After eyeballing the feeder, I can say that roughly equates to anywhere from 100-120 fully shelled peanuts.
On a side note, blue jays and other birds really seem to love these peanuts so you’ll have to refill this bird feeder fast. They will gobble them up quicker than you can imagine, so you might want to keep plenty of whole peanuts on hand for refilling purposes since they go so quickly.
Our Final Verdict: Birds Choice Blue Jay Feeder
I think it’s truly phenomenal that you read through the entirety of this review. I spend so much time putting together this information after spending even more time thoroughly testing out this bird feeder along with 9 others.
