Our Verdict: Solar Hanging Bird Bath
It’s no surprise that many of you are intrigued to learn about the Solar Hanging Bird Bath.
This unique bird bath has a lot to offer, like:
It’s really easy to install. You’d be surprised how many people shy away from buying birdbaths because they fear the installation process. This is simply one of the easiest.
You can: hang it from a screw or hook or tree branch…
Or: you can place the bowl directly on the ground and let the birds clean themselves and enjoy your birdbath without hanging it up at all.
Next…
Direct access to sunlight is an absolute must with this birdbath. Why? It will only receive a full charge after spending about 6-8 hours in the sun.
Less time in the sun means the twinkling yellow light bulb will not shine as long or as brightly at night.
Next…
It’s simple to clean. Climb up on a ladder or step stool and unhook it from the chain or tree branch. Empty it out and wipe it off. Afterward, you can hang it up again just like it was.
Fair warning: this birdbath is made of glass, which means it could potentially break easier than other models.
Keep it clear of potential obstructions, empty it out and bring it inside when it’s freezing cold, and always be careful when hanging it up.
Overall, I feel that this is a wonderful choice. And as an interesting caveat, you can also use the glass bowl as a bird feeder if you prefer keeping it drained of water for some time.

Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results
At this stage of the review, it’s time to shift gears entirely.
How so?
For the next six sections, we will look at the Solar Hanging Bird Bath from an analysis, testing, and comparison point of view.
Remember, I reviewed 7 other solar birdbaths along with this one. And I matched them up based on certain characteristics that I talked about earlier.
Those characteristics include:
- Power Output
- Design
- Ease of Cleaning
- Ease of Assembly
- Aesthetics
- Material
Now… It’s time to dig into the greater details and see how this particular birdbath matches up against the other birdbaths in this category.
Believe it or not, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that this product will excel in some categories and wind up in last place in other categories.
Why?
Well, when you’re comparing it to 7 other birdbaths, some are bound to be better at certain things than others and vice versa.
Let’s find out how it matches up with the rest of the group without further delay.
Power Output
For the category labeled Power Output, I rated this product with an 8 out of 10 overall ranking. Oddly enough, this actually places the solar birdbath in last place.
Say what?
That sounds a lot worse than it really is, so try not to worry.
From a Power Output perspective, the only thing that needs to be powered is a soft yellow light bulb. It doesn’t require much energy to keep this light bulb lit during the night, so the power output is almost irrelevant with this product.
Yet…
I did knock off a few points because it requires a lot of direct sunlight during the day in order to make the soft yellow light shine brightly at night.
Yup, you have to keep it directly in the sun for 6-8 hours every day to achieve the maximum energy boost and brightness from the light.
On the other hand…
There are two good things to keep in mind about this solar birdbath and how it’s powered.
They are:
- There is an on/off switch that allows you to turn the light on and off at your behest
- It has a AAA battery capable of storing solar power that charges up and saves the energy for later use
Design
As far as the design goes, I rated the Solar Hanging Bird Bath with a 7 out of 10. Unfortunately, this also puts this birdbath in last place in a head-to-head comparison with the other 7 solar birdbaths.
Why is it the worst of the bunch?
Again, I’m not trying to make it seem like this is a bad product because nothing could be further from the truth. But it does have one major issue that caused me to knock 3 points off of the score.
What’s the issue?
The birdbath bowl is made of glass! And because it’s made of glass, it is particularly fragile and can break quite easily if you aren’t careful.
I mentioned earlier that some people place the birdbath bowl directly on the ground outside. While this is certainly one way to use the birdbath, it’s not necessarily the smartest choice.
And this is especially true if you have young children or lots of foot traffic walking around in your backyard or in the vicinity of the bowl. They could easily trip over it, step on it, or crush it and break it because it’s fragile.
And another thing…
The water in the bowl can easily freeze in the colder months. Frozen water could potentially crack the glass bowl if you leave it there for too long.
From a functional design point of view, this birdbath is lightweight, hangs up beautifully in your backyard, but the glass could crack which means you have to be very careful when you own this product.
Ease Of Cleaning
In the category Ease of Cleaning, I rated this product with a 7 out of 10. This also places this product in last place for this particular category.
I know this seems terrible, but there’s a reason why it came in last. And I promise this is the final category that this product ended up in last place.
What happened?
Well, this product is actually very easy to clean in one respect. If the bowl is lying on the floor, it’s really lightweight so it’s easy to pick up, drain the water, and then wash it off in the dishwasher or with a towel by hand.
But think about it from this perspective…
What happens if it’s hanging up in a tree? Or it’s hanging from another hard-to-reach location?
In truth, you should always keep it within arm’s length to make your life a heck of a lot easier. But some people have no choice but to place it high up and out of reach.
In this particular situation, you’ll have to climb up on a ladder or stepstool to get to the birdbath. You can either dump it out while you’re up there or unhook it to wash it off after you climb down from the ladder or stool.
Ultimately, you’ll have to decide which method of cleaning is the best to meet your personal needs and requirements.
So, this can be difficult to clean if you place the birdbath so high up that it’s hard to reach. Otherwise, cleaning and maintaining this birdbath is an absolute breeze.
Ease Of Assembly
For Ease of Assembly, I rated this product with a 9 out of 10. This places this solar birdbath in a tie for 3rd place.
Two other products had tied for first place in this category.
What makes it so easy to assemble?
In all honesty, there really isn’t much to it. I could’ve even rated this higher, but chose not to because it’s easy to assemble, but some might find it difficult to hang up.
Ultimately, the assembly is simply a matter of connecting the chains to the glass birdbath bowl. Or if you intend to rest it on the floor, there is absolutely no assembly required in that case.
So, as I said, there really isn’t too much happening with the assembly portion of this product. Although some people might find it slightly difficult to hang it up.
But truth be told,
putting up a hook or hammering in a nail has nothing to do with the product itself and the overall assembly is not difficult.
Aesthetics
As far as aesthetics are concerned, I rated this product with a 10 out of 10. This actually puts it in a three-way tie for 1st place. Yay!
The reason?
Well, this is an absolute no-brainer. Just look at the gorgeous multicolored bright and shiny design.
First off, the glass bowl is painted with a beautiful picture of a peacock in full bloom. It has lots of bright colors in purple, yellow, green, blue, teal, and more.
You’re going to love the way this glass peacock looks.
Next, is the lighted glass ball.
The ball itself is clear, yet on the inside it has a gorgeous glowing yellow light emanating from the center. It’s so pretty that it’s hard to describe. Check out the pictures and see for yourself because I know you’re going to be amazed!
Overall, I think the aesthetic appeal is really incredible. Combine this with the fact that it hangs from a hook in full view, which makes this a tantalizing decoration and a useful birdbath/feeder to boot.
Material
For the Material, I rated this product with an 8 out of 10, which places it in
a four-way tie
for 3rd place.
Don’t be alarmed, because 3rd place is a great place to be,
yet it isn’t 100% perfect.
The metal chain is very sturdy and it was built to hold up the glass bowl without any difficulty whatsoever.
And
the hook on the top of the birdbath is also sturdy and strong.
But…
The glass bowl is the reason why I had to shave off a few points for my rating. Because as I mentioned, the glass itself is somewhat fragile and easy enough to break if you aren’t being careful.
Solar Hanging Bird Bath FAQs:
How Much Weight Can The Solar Hanging Bird Bath Hold?
Unfortunately, I do not have an exact manufacturer recommendation to provide you as far as how much weight can be held within the bowl of this birdbath.
But here’s what I can say…
The bowl itself is relatively shallow, so it only holds about 9-10 ounces of water at most, which is less than a pound.
I read online that one product owner wanted to put a 15-pound block of birdseed within this birdbath bowl.
I wouldn’t recommend it. That’s much too much weight for a lightweight glass bowl of this caliber. It’ll likely end up cracking because it’s too much weight to bear.
Personally, my best guess is no more than 2-3 pounds of weight should be added to the bowl.
What Is The Best Way To Ensure The Lights Work At Night?
In a word… Sunlight!
Make sure the birdbath is in full view of the sun during the day for at least 6-8 hours. Otherwise, the solar battery will not receive enough energy from the sun to fully charge.
Another thing: there’s an on/off switch to turn the yellow solar light on or off at night. Obviously, you should make sure the solar light switch is turned on in order to get the light to work at night.
Is This Solar Bird Bath Fragile?
Yes, this birdbath is fragile. There is no way around it because the bowl is made of glass and it could potentially shatter or break.
To prevent shattering, consider the following:
- Bring the birdbath inside on a windy or rainy day
- Bring the birdbath inside during freezing temperatures and empty out the water
- Hang the birdbath in an open space and make sure a breeze will not cause it to bump into something and crack
Finally…
It’s fragile because it’s made of glass but it doesn’t have to become a hindrance. Many people have owned this gorgeous glass hanging birdbath for years without any complaints.
